In June SSA organised a tour of the new Sheffield Hallam University 'Heart of the Campus' Building. The tour was led by Anne Daw of HLM and Claire Hamilton, the estates manager for Sheffield Hallam University which gave a great perspective of the project from the Client, user and Architect sides.
The building provides accommodation for the Psychology and Law departments, including a moot court, with associated study and dining facilities. Staff accommodation is located on the top floor, with a rooftop garden with views over the campus. The energy efficient building connects a number of disparate buildings, linking two different entrances to the campus and providing a true heart at the centre.
SHU say this about the space:
The new Heart of the Campus - a three storey development - is an open, energy-efficient building with cutting edge facilities. Along with its spacious classrooms, PC labs, lecture theatre and dedicated courtroom, the building has a number of informal spaces including a café and rooftop garden. In-line with its aesthetic of 'bringing-the-outdoors-in', the building is heated entirely by ground source heat pumps, and features solar panels and rainwater harvesting.
The new development gives our students high-quality, innovative teaching and learning facilities. But it also creates a true heart in which staff, students and businesses can come together. A venue which is perfect for anything from informal social gatherings to more structured events, Heart of the Campus is available to hire by members of the University and the wider business community for meetings, conferences and corporate events.
